About the Film
FAQ

When a child can’t read, their chances of incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment increase. That’s why Oakland based NAACP activist Kareem Weaver believes literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time and is fighting for better reading instruction. “What good is winning the right to vote if we can’t even read the ballot?” Fed up with the bleak reading scores in his own community, Kareem files a petition with the Oakland Unified School District demanding change.

LENA is a national nonprofit on a mission to transform children’s futures through early talk technology and data-driven programs. We care about conversational turns. The more conversational turns a child has, the better their outcomes will be.

LENA offers two flagship, evidence-based programs for early childhood educators and families, LENA Grow and LENA Start. These programs deliver targeted, objective feedback on how many interactions children are experiencing directly into the hands of caregivers.

The results are positive changes in children’s early language, early literacy, and social-emotional development; strengthened caregiver-child relationships; improved classroom quality; and increased teacher satisfaction and reduced caregiver stress. Learn more at www.LENA.org
