Burning Out

.

Burning Out is literally a drama about life and death. For two years, Belgian director Jérôme le Maire followed the members of a surgical unit in one of the biggest hospitals in Paris. Constantly under severe stress, understaffed and subject to severe budget cuts, employees fight each other for resources. Meanwhile the management imposes ever more stringent efficiency and profitability targets. All over Europe burnout has reached epidemic proportions among employees in the public and private sectors. Will we end up killing ourselves? Or will we be able to find meaning and joy at work?

Press

  • Cineuropa
In this documentary, Jérôme Le Maire, who spent a year getting his bearings before getting out his camera, offers a spontaneous and sympathetic view of a situation where intense conflict is taking place between the different professional bodies, as a direct result of the reorganization of the working system, all carried out in the name of efficiency. What is shocking in Burning Out is the brutal speed at which the new process is implemented.

"It also is refreshing to see medical professionals who we normally only encounter as impersonal figures hidden behind surgical masks and scrubs, as multi-faceted people."
    Bernard Dichek
