Toto and his Sisters

.

Following his Emmy award-winning observational documentary, Alexander Nanau brings us the astonishing family story of Toto (10), and his sisters, Ana (17) and Andreea (15). During their mother’s imprisonment, Toto passionately learns dancing, reading and writing, while his sisters try to keep the family together in a world that has long forgotten what the innocence of childhood should be. What happens when we discover that we can get more from life than our parents have to offer?

Press

  • Variety
Alexander Nanau’s immersive, hands-off docu is a powerful look at siblings in a Bucharest slum unlikely to escape the grip of drugs, poverty and a monstrous mother.
  • The Hollywood Reporter
All the more effective for never needing to underline the severity of its protagonists' plight.
  • PopMatters
It offers complication and nuance, as well as respect for the kids' ingenuity, their generosity, and their havoc.
  • Slant Magazine
It conjures up risky, relevant, and quite personal ideas about drug prohibition and conveys experiences in recovery that are rattling.
